Job Title: Access to H.E. Social Science Lecturer (Sociology and Psychology)

Department: Access to Higher Education

Salary: £34,789 - £43,139 per year
Job Type: Full time, permanent, 35 hours per week


We are looking for a dedicated Social Sciences Lecturer to join our Access to Higher Education department. In this role, you will create stimulating, high-quality learning opportunities that enthuse adult students, making subject content relevant, current, and strongly linked to employers and the local economy.

Many of our adult learners face unique barriers or may be navigating negative past experiences with education. As such, you will take an empathetic, trauma-informed approach to your teaching, helping to rebuild their academic confidence and empowering them to achieve their full potential.


Responsible to: Head of Access to Higher Education

Key Responsibilities

  • High-Quality Delivery: Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, innovative lessons across Level 2 and Level 3 social science qualifications.
  • Inclusive & Motivating Environment: Establish a purposeful, safe, and welcoming learning environment. Use a range of teaching styles to engage adult students, overcome learning barriers, and encourage independence.
  • Assessment & Tracking: Set and mark work, track student progress and attendance, and provide constructive feedback in line with College and School Assessment policies.
  • Behaviour & Respect: Maintain clear classroom procedures that promote mutual respect, while actively challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
  • Curriculum Development: Liaise with the Head of School and curriculum teams to design engaging programmes, manage necessary course administration, and introduce exciting enrichment opportunities.
  • Skills Support: Collaborate with relevant experts to identify and address additional English and Maths skills development needs within the subject area.


Requirements & Experience

  • Subject Expertise: Specific experience delivering Sociology and/or Psychology to adult students is highly advantageous.
  • Differentiated Learning: A proven ability to design inclusive lessons that accommodate diverse learning needs, backgrounds, and past educational experiences.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Committed to staying aware of national developments in the subject area, reviewing own professional needs, and participating fully in annual training.

  • Cross-College Support: Support wider college activities as required, particularly during key enrolment and exam invigilation periods.
  • Community Engagement: Make a positive contribution to welcome evenings, open events, and marketing activities.
  • Flexibility: Carry out any other relevant and appropriate duties as determined by the needs of the service and appropriate to the grade.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential:

  1. Educated to Level 4 e.g. Degree or equivalent in either Psychology, Sociology (or related degree).
  2. A recognised Teaching qualification.
  3. Successful recent previous teaching experience.
  4. Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programs of the College.
  5. Proven relevant experience of curriculum planning, development & delivery in maths
  6. Knowledge and understanding of Access to H.E Diplomas and Pre-Access.
  7. Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.
  8. Minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete.
  9. High level of communication and interpersonal skills, effective member of a team.
  10. Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves.
  11. Expert communication skills and an ability to develop professional relationships with students.
  12. An ability to motivate learners with enthusiastic and imaginative presentation.
  13. Taking responsibility for the progress of learners within your classes.
  14. Meeting requirements for the assessment and recording of Learners' development. Preparing and marking work to facilitate positive learner development.

Desirable:

  1. Good understanding of using ICT to facilitate curriculum design and delivery.
